Ghost in the Well
Once there came a 'Navab' in Ayodhya. Wherever he went he caused catastrophe. He would capture small children and would rob people.
Dharmadev was worried about his family and therefore he with his family left the town for a few days and settled at ‘Tinva’. In Tinva there lived Prathit Pande with his wife Vanchnabai. Dharmadev settled in their house. Everyday Vanchnabai used to feed Ghanshyam with different varieties of food. Bhaktimata helped her with the housework and used to fetch water. Bhaktimata was prohibited to fetch water from the well at night because there were thousand of demons living in the well.
It all happened one day when at night the water finished. By mistake Bhaktimata went to fetch water. She tied the rope and put the pot in the water. Even before the pot had reached the water, the demons took hold of the pot. Bhaktimata tried to pull the it out but she couldn’t. When she peered into the well, she saw the demons. She was very frightened. Walking quickly and with long studs she returned home.
Upon reaching home, Ghanshyam asked, “What happened mother? Why have you come hurriedly? Where is the pot and rope?” Bhaktimata narrated to him the whole incidence.
The following day Ghanshyam got ready to jump in the well. All villagers gathered around. They tried to discourage Ghanshyam but He listened to noone. With a very great force He jumped in the well. The moment He jumped in, all the demons woke up. The demons put their hands forward to catch Him but the next moment Ghanshyam was surrounded by light, which was emitted from his body. All the demons started to burn. All of them prayed, “Oh God please help us”.Ghanshyam asked them from where they had come. One of them said that lon ago they used to eat meat, drink liquor, gamble and speak lies. They quarreled with the emperor (Badshah) and in the end there was a war and all of them were killed. But because they were big sinners they were changed into demons and put in the well.” The demons told Ghanshyam, “O Lord, destroy our sins and forgive us.”
Ghanshyam forgave them and gave them moksha (salvation). He sent them to Badrkashram. From then on, no demons were left in the well. People went, to fetch water whenever they wanted. Every one praised Ghanshyam and bowed at his feet.
